Caring for Your Collections Travels the Globe
Although it was published 12 years ago, Caring for Your Collections continues to be in demand. The U.S. Department of State recently purchased 200 copies for its diplomatic residences and other buildings around the world that house cultural objects owned by the government.
Caring for Your Collections is a compilation of expert advice from conservation professionals about caring for art and objects, concentrating on preventive maintenance, how to watch for damage, and when and how to obtain the help of a professional conservator when damage does occur.
Jennifer Helmkamp of the State Department's Overseas Buildings Operations Curatorial Services Program, which is responsible for identifying and maintaining art, antiques, and other cultural objects in buildings overseas, has placed three orders of Caring for Your Collections since its publication in 1992. She gives copies to anyone responsible for property in the Foreign Service.
"When meeting with a property manager, deputy chief, or ambassador, I give them the book and tell them it'll be a great resource," she said. "It's ideal for our situation."
