AIC and Heritage Preservation Present Collections Care Award to MFA Boston

Larry Reger, President of Heritage Preservation, and Nancy Shrock, Treasurer of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, presented the Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, at the museum’s annual meeting of the Boards of Trustees and Overseers on September 18, 2000.

MFA Boston was recognized for its overall commitment to conservation. A trustee/staff committee oversees conservation tasks and reappraises conservation needs regularly, and a disaster preparedness committee has a broad-ranging plan for museum-wide response to disasters and emergencies. Two collections care specialist positions have been endowed.

MFA Director Malcolm Rogers accepted the award. There was a presentation of preliminary plans for major renovation and building at the museum, with conservation a key consideration.

MFA Boston is one of four winners of this year’s award, along with Fairmount Park Art Association, Philadelphia; Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto; and Alden B. Dow Home and Studio, Midland, Michigan.

This is the first year multiple winners have been chosen. The awards committee felt that the 15 nominees demonstrated outstanding commitments to different types of collections with different levels of resources available and that it would be unjust to recognize only one.

Nominations for the 2001 awards are due November 15, 2000. For more about the award, click here.
