2003 Save America's Treasures Grants Announced
The 2003 Save Americas Treasures grants awarded $14,389,925 to 63 projects in 29 states and the District of Columbia.
Included in the grants are 26 projects for the conservation and care of collections, and two projects to conserve major works of outdoor sculpture. Since the inception of the Save Americas Treasures program, Heritage Preservation has worked to ensure that the program addressed the needs of collections as well as structures.
Selected collections projects include:
- George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, $380,000 to transfer 28 mm films onto contemporary archival formats;
- The Library Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, $300,000 for conservation of significant items associated with Benjamin Franklin housed in more than a dozen institutions;
- Makah Cultural and Research Center, Makah Tribe, Neah Bay, Washington, $152,000 for a climate control system to preserve a collection of over 55,000 tribal artifacts;
- University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, $135,000 for preservation copies of political advertising dating from the earliest years of television;
- Pejepscot Historical Society, Brunswick, Maine, $50,000 to implement a climate control system to preserve Victorian artifacts in the Skolfield-Whittier House.
