| BOLL WEEVIL MONUMENT By artist unknown City of Enterprise, Alabama 1919 This sculpture titled the Boll Weevil Monument is a woman in Grecian clothing holding a boll weevil. This monument was shipped from Italy and dedicated in 1919. The townspeople of Enterprise, Alabama, wanted to acknowledge the role that this bug played in their state's agriculture. The boll weevil destroyed almost 40% of the area's crop in the year 1919. Unable to destroy the insect, the farmers of Alabama had to change their cotton crop to one that the boll weevil didn't rely on for survival. This opened up the region to other kinds of farming. This piece stands in commemoration of that turning point in Alabama's history where the citizens discovered how to turn a disaster into a triumph. |
