| If Sculptures Could Talk . . . |
|
| VAQUERO By Luis Jimenez, 1940- Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC Molded 1980 (cast 1990) Luis Jimenez is famous for his sculpture of western themes. Vaquero is a reminder that Mexicans were the first cowboys of the west. It depicts an athletic cowboy on his bucking horse. Cowboys and westerns have been the topic of fascination for Americans for many years. And yet, they are usually not attributed to their Mexican or Spanish roots. Jimenez creates outdoor sculptures that focus on Mexican American culture as he sees it. He also incorporates Native Americans and tribal themes in his work. The pieces are shiny, colorful, full of motion and movement and often larger-than-life. |
