Brownies Earn SOS! Patch
Brownie Troop #989 in York Springs, Pennsylvania, recently completed the SOS patch requirements. They visited the Gettysburg Military Park and observed outdoor statues and the effects of the weather (such as acid rain) and time on them. They were also able to see the forms of plants that attach themselves to the statues and learn how the statues can be cleaned and restored.
The troop also visited and talked with Victor Gavin, monument preservation specialist at the park. The Brownies observed how the cannons at the park are taken apart and the restoration process. They also talked about the care and preservation of statues that are inside. The girls also had the opportunity to walk through the cemetery at the park and observe the aged gravestones of the Civil War soldiers.
