Best Practices for Condition Assessments of Historic Structures held on September 21

The Best Practices for Condition Assessments of Historic Structures workshop was held on September 21 in Portland, Maine. Approximately 60 architects attended the day-long workshop held in conjunction with the Association for Preservation Technology International annual conference. The speakers included nine of the Conservation Assessment Program’s most experienced architectural assessors.

The program opened with an in-depth look at the Pejepscot Historical Society, a typical CAP museum with collections and historic buildings that is staffed by two full-time and five part-time paid staff and volunteers. Executive Director Deborah Smith discussed the museum’s CAP experience, from their 1999 site visit through their progress implementing recommendations. The Historical Society's CAP assessors, John Leeke and Ronald Harvey, completed the panel with their insight into the Historical Society and its CAP experience.

The program was further developed through three panels: “Maximizing the Site Visit,” “Working with Collections Assessors,” and “Writing Effective Reports.” These sessions were designed to address various issues that have been brought to the attention of the CAP staff over the years. The program ended with “Technological Innovations That Can Streamline CAP.” A complete list of speakers and descriptions of the panels can be found here.

One of the greatest successes of the program was the dialogue it created between the panelists and the attendees. Both sides were very enthusiastic and shared helpful tips and techniques for conducting conditions assessments. Many in attendance who did not previously know about CAP expressed interest in becoming assessors. All of the useful ideas and techniques that were shared in the program will be collated into a publication for distribution to all CAP assessors.

Seventeen attendees stayed on to attend an optional second day program organized by APT and held at The Victoria Mansion.
