The following cultural and fund-raising organizations can provide further information, publications and technical assistance.

American Association for State and Local History

AASLH is a national professional organization that provides publications, information and training to benefit history professionals and volunteers working in libraries and archives, historical societies, museums, historic sites, parks and historic preservation and academic institutions. The organization publishes the bimonthly magazine History News.

American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel

This association advances philanthropy through research, education and public awareness and promotes an ethical approach to fund raising. The association publishes Giving USA, a comprehensive annual report of philanthropy and trends in grantmaking.

American Association of Museums

AAM is a national professional organization that represents art museums, history museums, science museums, youth museums, historic buildings and sites, science and technology centers, aquariums, zoos, arboreta, botanical gardens and military and maritime museums. Publications include the Official Museum Directory, the bimonthly Museum News magazine and Aviso, a monthly newsletter. AAM's bookstore sells museum-related publications including The Big Book of Museum Grant Money, and the Technical Information Service provides the "Professional Practices Series" of resource reports. The association also has nine standing professional committees, including one devoted to development and membership.

American Library Association

ALA is a national professional organization of public and private libraries. Two divisions--Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (Preservation and Reformatting Section) and Library Administration and Management Association--provide information about fund raising and preservation. ALA has many publications, including the How-To-Do-It Manuals for Librarians series, which has several fund-raising titles.

Association of Research Libraries

This association is the national professional organization of research and academic libraries that publishes ARL: A Bimonthly Newsletter of Research Library Issues and Actions. The Office of Management Publications offers publications for sale. Also available are SPEC (Systems and Procedures Exchange Center) Kits, which are technical information packages; seven address fund raising.

Business Committee for the Arts

This national, nonprofit organization encourages support of the arts by providing businesses with resources to make effective alliances with arts organizations. BCA offers a consultation service for businesses, publications, conferences and workshops, and a national and international data network of information about the arts.

Commission on Preservation and Access

The commission is a national nonprofit organization assisting libraries, archives and universities in developing collaborative strategies for the preservation of their collections. The commission provides technical information and education on preservation and access to preserved materials and advocates improving materials used for recorded information today.

The Foundation Center

Established by foundations, the Foundation Center is a national clearinghouse for information on foundations and corporate giving. It provides library services at its four reference centers in New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Cleveland. It offers a wide variety of publications.

The Grantsmanship Center

This national organization provides training and information on fund raising and current issues of interest to the nonprofit field. The center publishes the Whole Nonprofit Catalog three times a year; executives of nonprofit agencies can receive free issues on request.

National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property

NIC serves as a national forum for conservation and preservation activities in the United States. Among NIC efforts are the Conservation Assessment Program (CAP), Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!), the Increasing Funds for Collections Care project, the Emergency Response project, the Conservation and Preservation of Natural Science Collections project and Caring for Your Collections: Preserving and Protecting Your Art and Other Collectibles. SOS! has produced a fund-raising kit to assist individuals, groups and organizations in efforts to underwrite costs for professional treatment and maintenance of outdoor sculpture.

National Society of Fund Raising Executives

This national organization maintains more than 130 chapters across the United States; publications include NSFRE News and The NSFRE Journal. The National Fund Raising Library and Resource Center is available for members and nonmembers, providing a series of publications and tapes.

National Trust for Historic Preservation

The trust is a national nonprofit organization that works to preserve American cultural heritage through the preservation of communities and historic environments. Publications include the bimonthly magazine Historic Preservation and the quarterly newsletter Preservation Forum. The Information Series has several fund-raising titles.

Society of American Archivists

SAA provides national leadership on archival issues while promoting high-quality archival education programs, building effective coalitions, increasing public awareness of the value of archives and advancing identification, preservation and use of electronic records. The society publishes a quarterly journal, The American Archivist, and a bimonthly newsletter, Archival Outlook.
