Chief Mahaska, Sherry Edmundson Fry, 1907
Did you now that Iowa was named for a Native American Tribe that lived in the region? This sculpture shows Chief Mahaska of the Ioway Tribe. He is dressed in a heavy animal skin robe, long pants, and moccasins. On his head he wears a small feathered headdress. The artist, Sherry Edmundson Fry, was from Iowa but made this sculpture when he was going to school in Paris, France. Mr. Fry won an award for this sculpture at a very important art competition called the Paris Salon. Can you think of a very famous sculpture that was also made in France and shipped to the United States?
