VAQUERO
By Luis Jiminez, 1940-
Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American Art
8th and G Streets, NW
Washington, DC 20560
Molded 1980 (cast 1990)

Luis Jiminez is famous for his sculpture of western themes. Vaquero is a reminder that Mexicans were the first cowboys of the west. It depicts an athletic cowboy on his bucking horse. Cowboys and westerns have been topics of fascination for Americans for many years. And yet, they are usually not attributed to Mexican or Spanish roots. Jiminez creates outdoor sculptures that focus on Mexican American culture as he sees it. He also incorporates Native Americans and tribal themes in his work. The pieces are shiny, colorful, full of motion and movement and often larger-than-life.
