National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions
Application Deadline: May 15, 2006
Award Amount: Up to $5,000
Project Start Date: January 2007
This program is designed to help small and mid-size institutions, such as libraries, museums, and historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges, improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. These may include special collections of books and journals, archives and manuscripts, prints and photographs, moving images, sound recordings, architectural and cartographic records, decorative and fine arts, textiles, archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, furniture, and historical objects.
Awards of up to $5000 support preservation related collection assessments, consultations, and workshops, and institutional and collaborative disaster and emergency planning. Grants cover consultant fees, workshop registration fees, related travel and per diem expenses, and the costs of purchasing and shipping preservation supplies and equipment.
Institutions affected by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma are encouraged to request support through the Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions for the salvage and protection of damaged humanities collections. In addition to the activities above, institutions in the federally designated disaster areas that were affected by the hurricanes may also use Preservation Assistance Grants for the following:
- assessment of damage to collections
- mold abatement
- temporary relocation and storage of collections
- conservation treatment
No cost sharing is required. All grants are awarded for a period of eighteen months.
