President Nominates Anne-Imelda Radice as Head of IMLS

The White House announced December 13, 2005, that President Bush will nominate Anne-Imelda Radice, acting assistant chairman for programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities, to direct the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for a term of four years. Radice will replace Robert Martin, who began his four-year term in 2001. Mary Chute has served as IMLS acting director since the end of Martin's term. Earlier, Radice served as chief of staff for the U.S. Department of Education and as curator in the Office of the Architect of the Capitol. She holds a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts; a master's degree from Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy; a second master's from American University in Washington, D.C.; and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The nomination still requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

On December 14, 2005, the House approved the appropriations conference report that funds IMLS and other federal programs, which includes $36.06 million for the Office of Museum Services at IMLS. Currently the agency is operating with a funding level of $34.7 million.
