Chicago

Under City Stone by Caryl Yasko was assessed by Rescue Public Murals on July 16, 2008. The artist, mural conservators Elizabeth Kendall and Peter Schoenmann of Parma Conservation, Ltd., and Chicago Public Art Group’s executive director Jon Pounds and program director Brenda Vega participated in the assessment. After 35 years of exposure to pollution, dampness, and temperature fluctuations on the walls of a commuter rail underpass, the mural has degraded significantly. The assessment will help develop a plan to bring this dynamic community artwork back to life.

Santa Fe

The Rescue Public Murals’ Local Advisory Committee for Santa Fe has nominated Multi-Cultural Progression by Zara Kriegstein for an assessment. This 1981 15’ x 80’ mural on the side of Empire Builders depicts the historical movements of the diverse peoples of New Mexico and how they have learned to live together. Because of the severe physical deterioration of the mural, it has been threatened twice with removal. Fortunately, the meaningful imagery and importance of the artist to the Santa Fe community have been powerful arguments to save it.
